Steven Berkoff - Requiem For Ground Zero

The setting was simple, a spotlight, a man, a story. Now this is the first time i have seen him in all his glory in front of my very eyes, so unfortuantely i cannot cross refrence his performance to his previous.
He was sheer brilliance! The way in which he held our attention was phenomenal. the aeombic pentameter was, as he mentioned in the "in" talk afterwards, holding the effect of combining and bringing form to his piece. it was moving, and made one feel as if he was speaking sole truth. his body language and stage presence preceeded him and his diction and projection was unfalterable. his advice, and his suggestions of how to make the world a better place were suitable precisely. a work of art, a man of truth. a spectacle of awe.

Berkoff, i commend you!

Michael Mcintyre

As a huge fan of Michael Mcintyre,I found last night's gig extroadinarily bizzare. After seeing him perform in an intimate venue in Madrid, and at the Apollo in London, the Dome Experience was something I was relishing, how wrong I was!

I found his breathlessness at the start a little off putting and a tad unproffesional and hence I found it hard to immediately settle. As he got into his stride and his tongue got rolling it was like the Michael I had come to see, although I was pleased when he put an end to the "Gay Brighton" gags which after all my years in this town have become quite tiresome. The remainder of the first half ran smoothly enough, but the break for refreshment was welcome.

As Michael restarted I relaxed in my seat, ready to enjoy the second half and the added pleasure of knowing a relativley early night was in store, again how wrong I was! After another 45 minutes of Michael on relativley good form,I was getting a little tired and without meaning to sound too crude,a little bored. After another 30 minutes when my laughter had dried up completley,Michael thanked us,the audience, and disappeared backstage,I was too exhausted to applaud. As I dragged myself from my chair to leave, slightly relieved,he reappeared and continued for approximatley half an hour of which I have little or no memory, then at last it was over at 10.45.
The gig over ran by more than an hour, which I find insane, what happened?

Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide To The Orchestra

Baileys excellent performance and guide to all that is orchestral is a must for all, especially those who have even the slightest interest in the music that matters to the generation of today. His step by step guide to all of the music, scores, composers and TV themes of the past 30 years make for a very entertaining evening. As with anything staring Bailey, you can expect razor sharp wit and an impeccable timing, which will have you laughing until your jaw aches. and the collaboration of the BBC orchestra will not disappoint. this is a fantastic show, guaranteed not only make you laugh for hours but also give you a sense of culture and sophistication, plus numerous anecdotes about all of the instruments used in your favorite TV series.

Bailey is fantastic and defiantly worth a tease, and a fantastic opening to the Brighton Comedy Fest. Well Done Bill Bailey

However, lack of knowledge on such matters may leave you board and un-entertained, not that this applied to myself, but was more of a casual observation of the members of the audience under 12 years of age.

Van Morrison

Van Morrison really moves me. His music, his lyrics, the things he does with his voice, etc. Yet this was my second time seeing him live and the second time that his live act did not move me at all. No goosebumps, no shivers, no tears. Excellent music yes, excellent back-up vocalists, excellent musicians, excellent himself but yet you don't leave his concerts feeling fulfilled. And Van, if you're not going to say hello and you're going to turn your back to us acting like the only thing you care about is your drummers' performance, then why not at least let us have a drink while you do that?

Van Morrison

Van certainly is the man, great vocals and amazingly tight band. Great Great set, but this gig lacked any atmosphere at all. No hello, no goodbye, no banter just rattled through the songs in 1hr 30 flat. When you are that miserable isn't it time to give up the business? Tight seating didn't help, music like this requires people to get up and dance.

Gary Numan

On at 9.15 - off at 10.45. Lots of old, fat Numanoids (I'm 40, and not particularly fat...more pot-belly) Numan's hair transplant is getting the better of him, now he's turned 50. The sound was excellent, as was the lighting. His band couldn't have been tighter. Numan knows how to play to the audience, and we appreciated the energy put into it. If he plays Brighton again (which hopefully, he will, as apparantly he's now 'local'), I'd pay 20 quid of my hard-earned cash.

Eels

This was a gig that had it's ups and downs. Before the main event a 50 minute film about Mark Oliver Everett's father, who was an under-appreciated Physicist in his time, was shown. Whilst this was interesting for those who have an interest in Physics, or the history of the band, for those who just wanted to get on and hear some good music the film seemed really quite self indulgent. When E finally came out the show really began, and the music made up for the slow start to the evening. E's support on this evening came in the form of The Chet, who assisted E by playing everything from the ukulele to the electrical saw.

The musical highlight of the evening had to be during an extended version of "Flyswatter" where E began on the piano with The Chet on drums, and they swapped places without missing a beat. After a few more minutes playing with The Chet on piano and E on the drums they changed seamlessly again and ended the number in the same position as they started - a stunt that was visually and musically very impressive.

On the downside the interludes with E talking about reviews of the band and fan mail, and with The Chet reading from E's book seemed a bit superfluous to proceedings. The E has a good and witty manner with his audience and he made some good gags, holding it together well when making a mistake, or being heckled by the audience. These "readings" from fan mail, newspapers and the book again seemed self-indulgent and irritating even though it was clearly tongue-in-cheek.

Perhaps the biggest shame though was the quality of the audience. Whilst most were up for a good time, there were a few in the audience who's incessant heckling and verbal abuse being thrown towards the stage was totally inappropriate and made the atmosphere in the auditorium quite tense. The excess of flashing from cameras all over the auditorium was also extremely distracting, the stewards tried to subdue people from taking flash photographs but didn't really make much of an impact.

In general, when the band were playing the gig was electric, the music and performance were stunning. Everett's voice resonated beautifully in the classical auditorium and the range of sound that just the two of them produced was a testament to the skill, experience and showmanship of the Eels. The gig was let down slightly with brief interludes of bromidic chatter which was made worse with a minority in the audience who appeared to have bought tickets to see a band they don't like.

All in all the gig was not spectacular - but very pleasant.
